TEACHING ENGLISH TO YOUNG LEARNERS THROUGH TRADITIONAL GAMES
Assalaamu'alaikum Warahmatullaah
Whoaaaaa
long time no see, do you miss me? ehehe
I don't think so🤔
I want to review the journal that I read. The title is Teaching English To Young Learners Through Traditional Games.
why did I choose this title? First, because I have taken an EYL (English Young Learners) course.
So I'm curious, what kind of traditional games can be practiced in the T-EYL world.
This journal was written by Rusiana Nuraeningsih from Muria Kudus University.
Received: 23 November 2015. Revised: 1 January 2016. Accepted: 10 March 2016.
In this journal there are abstracts, keywords, introduction, methodology, result and discussion, conclusion and the last one is references.
In the introduction in this journal explain that 2013 curriculum affects the position of English in schools, especially in elementary schools. Previously English was local content in schools throughout in Indonesia. Because of this 2013 curriculum, teaching English later became extracurricular. In fact, elementary school students are those who will live in the world of competition where communication is needed.
Indonesia is one of the members of the ASEAN Community 2015 which means it is approved to use English in ASEAN trade. However, the 2013 curriculum doesn't seem to support the preparation of the younger generation to deal with it.
The 2013 curriculum places English as an additional subject with only 35 minutes per meeting once a week.
With that policy, there are concerns that neither teachers or students will realize the importance of English for communication.
Meanwhile, today most modern technologies use English. Primary students are exposed to the internet, television, smartphones, and others who speak English. However, the fact is that exposure isn't in line with the competencies expected in the use of English. Instead, children become the object of many games on the gadget. They spend a lot of time playing online games.
This is the problem that children tend to be more familiar with modern games and online from gadgets rather than traditional games. If children are given traditional games, they will feel games in real life that encourage interaction and communication with their friends.
According to Pellegrini (1991:241) in
Bennet (1998:5-6) games are defined into
three categories :
Games are considered not only something
fun but the result needs to be considered
also. Traditional games are games that are
exist in certain areas based on the local
culture. Traditional games are fun activities for entertaining, maintaining neighborhood, and social comfortable.
A worry that children is not ready with
the global demand and the shift of good
values, the writers conducted a research on
teaching English through traditional games
in Kudus regency, Central Java. In English
teaching and learning by using traditional
games, students have plenty of opportunities to interact and socialize with their mates and maintain traditional cultures as well.
I think enough😥😪 an explanation of the introduction from the journal. Don't get bored, because I will continue to review all components; methodology, etc.
